Saul Simington was a gifted photographer, mentor and friend. He inspired me back in 1992 when I first opened my first studio on Tidewater Dr. in Norfolk. We met in a camera store on 21 st. and I would go in there just to pick his brain. He knew everything about every camera, film type you name it. He was the consummate professional in every aspect of photography. If you had a question he would take the time to answer it. He had studio lights when everyone else had the sun. Saul Simington was the photographer that everyone wanted to be like. I remember hanging out in his studio three times a week just watching him in the dark room or doing shoots. Trust me, it wasn't just me, there were many more. You almost had to wait your turn to get in. The beauty of it all, he would tell you everything about what he did. He would tell you what to do and have you set it up and shoot it while he watched. He was amazing!!
He was a fashion photographer extraordinaire who shot with a vengence. Once a model shot with Saul, consider them "untouchable". "Saul is my photographer", I can still hear it ringing in my head. Once I heard that I would move on... That's why it can to no surprise he left Hampton Roads and took on a bigger challenge in our nations capital. In no time, Saul became a rock star in DC, opening up his "state of the art" image studio the Image House. In 2000, I took a trip to his studio only to be blown away by his work. He was working on a project with Puffy shooting one of his artists. The Sourc Vibe, Essence, Jet, you name it, he did it. Mishawn Cole, CEO of M & C Group, Inc. a marketing firm in Washington, DC called me last year about a big project. She told me that I would be working with another photographer shooting advertisement designs. When she told me the other photographer was Saul, it came to no surprise. Mishawn explained to me that Saul the hottest photographer in the Metropolitan area shooting for all of the advertising agencies up and down the east coast. At that time, I knew he had made his mark. Saul, I never had a chance to tell you what you meant to me and so many other photographers. You gave us hope and the will to succeed. I will miss you my brother. I would tell you that I will keep it going, but your shoes were too big for one photographer to fill. When someone asked me what's the one thing that comes to mind when I think about Saul. It's simply his unwavering determination to be the best he could be. Rest in peace my brother. I love you.
