Yesterday evening was a defining moment in my photographic career. No I didn't receive an individual award such as "Photographer of the Year" or a cover of a fashion magazine. I received the ultimate blessing, making a difference in a young photographer's life. Sarah Lauderback has been my intern for nine weeks. The 18 year old shutterbug was part of the School to Work Program at Chesapeake Bay Academy. The School to Work program allows the students to intern with a company in which they share the same common interests. Nora Jump-Scott, Marketing Director for the Founders Inn, asked me if I would be interested in this program and if I would be willing to mentor Sarah. I told her I would be more than happy to take her under my wing. Sarah, whose was relatively shy, got see to see what the photography world was like in the real world. The first week I had an assignment with Hampton Roads Magazine in which Sarah assisted me with lighting. She had the opportunity to meet art directors and food editors on the set. The following week she assisted me on a cd shoot for an up and coming r&b singer and several bridal sessions. She also was tasked to do extensive photo retouching, along with a host of other administrative duties. Her last week of the program, I gave her a commercial assignment that consisted of shooting at least 300 photos at fashion garments in Tiffany's and then present a portfolio of her ten best shots. Sarah took it a step further. Not only did she blow me away with her portfolio, she put together a photo exhibit that got rave reviews with her teachers as well as her peers and school administrators. And that's not all. She orchestrated an amazing slideshow on her new Macbook as part of her stunning presentation. Her presentation was by far the best out of the 30 presentations that I visualized. I brought my son Brandon along with me so he could experience Sarah's magical moment. Words cannot explain the joy I saw in Sarah's eyes. Although I was awarded with a lovely certificate for mentoring, teaching and inspiring Sarah in her quest for excellence, this was truly Sarah's moment of glory. Although the program is officially over, Sarah will be attending Tidewater Community College in the fall, while working with me throughtout the summer. I just want to thank Rebecca, Sarah's mom for giving me the opportunity to be a part of her life. "Greatness is measured not by the greatness in you, but your ability to instill greatness in others".
